The Girls Squad – TY Athletics Programme for Girls in Irish Schools

The Girls Squad is a free TY programme that helps girls explore athletics, movement, and leadership in Irish schools. Created by Athletics Ireland and supported by Her Moves.

What Is The Girls Squad?

A Transition Year programme bringing athletics, wellbeing, and leadership to schools across Ireland

The Girls Squad is a school-based Transition Year programme developed by Athletics Ireland and proudly supported by Her Moves. It gives TY students the opportunity to design and deliver their own athletics project while building confidence, promoting wellbeing, and encouraging lifelong participation in sport.

We are now at 2,400 girls registered to start in September, which is a fantastic reflection of the growing interest in the programme across Ireland.

Who Is It For?

The Girls Squad is designed for all TY girls. Whether you already enjoy sport or are just looking to try something new, this programme creates a space where everyone can take part, learn new skills, and move in a way that feels good.

Each project is led by students and supported by a teacher. Over six weeks, groups create a unique athletics-themed project that combines physical activity with creative reflection and presentation.

What Does It Involve?

Students create their own project with both a physical and written element. These projects are displayed in the school and can focus on a range of topics, such as:

  • Running an athletics event
  • Promoting healthy lifestyle habits
  • Exploring the role of athletics in everyday life
  • Designing a school fitness programme to increase participation

The programme also includes practical weekly sessions. These may include:

  • Athletics movement and fundamental skills
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Yoga or Pilates
  • Team games and relays
  • Confidence, leadership, and communication development

What Support Is Provided?

Each participating school receives a complete support pack, including:

  • Weekly session plans for teachers
  • Student journals
  • Online video resources
  • Teacher webinars at the beginning of the programme
  • Social media toolkit
  • Girls Squad merchandise

Students track their physical activity levels before, after, and three months following the programme. This feedback is submitted to Athletics Ireland to support ongoing programme development.

Why Take Part?

The Girls Squad is a fun and meaningful way to bring athletics into school life. It gives girls the chance to take ownership of their own experience, build skills, and explore movement in a positive and supportive environment.

The programme helps students build lasting connections with sport. It may even lead to future involvement in local athletics clubs, volunteering, park runs, or coaching roles.
